A Quick Biography of
|
|
| Fred Perry was born in Virginia, and spent much of his childhood in Atlanta. For his
school years, however, he and his family were back in Virginia. Fred was an avid Marvel fan, into the Avengers and X-Men in particular. He became especially interested in the writing work of Chris Claremont. He tells a story of walking 2 miles in knee-deep snow to get a copy of New Mutants #1. Like all aspiring comics creators, Fred sent many submissions to the various comics companies. After eight submissions to Antarctic Press, they finally published some of his work in the NINJA HIGH SCHOOL Yearbook #1. Soon afterwards, in 1989, Fred was hired by Malibu Press to pencil their TOM CORBETT book. After boot camp in the marine corps,Fred studied computer science at Virginia Tech, where he and a classmate hunted down and debugged a "©-brain" virus that had been plaguing the school's system. For his sophomore year, he transferred to Norfolk State, and while there, he began doing inks on the ROBOTECH series and started work on CYBERKNIGHTS for Malibu.
THEN . . . While in Saudi Arabia, Fred found that his artistic abilities became quite valuable. Since magazines were not allowed, soldiers were desperate for dirty pictures! Fred could trade sketches for snack foods and toiletry items, things that could not be bought with money. When he returned to Virginia (having been in combat just long enough to NOT qualify for VA benefits), Fred was determined to find a use for his new-found penchant for sexy babes. He brainstormed for some time before coming up with GOLD DIGGER! Currently, Fred lives up in the outskirts of Northern New York, where he gets to dig his way out of his home through the snow every winter. |

Where GOLD DIGGER came from . . .Wanting to do something racy, but having no definite ideas, Fred was stuck. Then he saw a Three Musketeers ad in which the musketeers were dressed like Indiana Jones. He suddenly had an exciting idea . . . a FEMALE version of Indy! What could be more exciting . . . with more opportunity for sexy fun?The first version of Gina Diggers was a loner. She would, however, encounter an overly busty and man-hungry jungle woman who could scoop up unsuspecting explorers at lightning speed. This speed garnered her the nickname "Cheetah." At this point, Fred was becoming a crazed STREET FIGHTER player, and one day it occured to him that Cheetah should be more animalistic, like the jungle man BLANKA in the video game. He came up with a female version of BLANKA, but she was REALLY ugly. Too ugly to use in a comics series that was aiming to be sexy. So Fred redesigned Cheetah a number of times, using various animal traits. When he used the cheetah design that her namesake suggested, it all fell into place. Then he rewrote her character to explain why she actually LOOKS like a cheetah, and he made her Gina's adventuring partner. Antarctic Press liked it, and in 1991 started running a series of GOLD DIGGER short stories in their anthology book MANGAZINE! Want to see a checklist of EVERYTHING Fred's done? CLICK HERE!
